We are looking to appoint a Professor in the field of Ocean and Earth Sciences as part of a series of 4 new appointments to further enhance our research-oriented education and expand the international reach of our research activities and business. This will be the first part of a series of appointments planned over the next five years. You will have an exciting opportunity to influence the ocean and earth science agenda at a world renowned school at the University of Southampton. Our school is proud of to research which encompasses marine biology and ecology, physical oceanography, paleooceanography and paleoclimate, marine biogeochemistry, geology, geophysics and geochemistry. We run the prestigious NERC INSPIRE (DTP) doctoral training program and are home to one of the largest graduate schools in ocean and earth sciences in the world, with over 150 doctoral students. We are an integral part of both the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Life Sciences. We are home to the only Regius Chair in Ocean Sciences in the country. Based at the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, we have a range of unique and world-class facilities. We collaborate widely nationally and internationally, including our close collaborative relationship with the independent National Center for Oceanography.

You will have a growing international profile in one aspect of marine biology. The ability of organisms to respond and adapt to environmental and climate change and / or other human activities can have major implications for food security, coastal and marine protection, restoration, and long-term management strategies. term. We are seeking an outstanding marine biologist, with interests in whole animal biology and ecophysiology or related research areas that address the challenges of marine conservation, management and food security. The school is exceptionally well equipped to support this work, housing a multi-user aquarium and experimental facilities capable of strict environmental control and hyperbaric capability. The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to build a long-term program that complements existing strengths in this area within the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and the university at large.

You will demonstrate a passion for education and an ability to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate program in Ocean and Earth Sciences.

Strong applicants must demonstrate:

  • A doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
  • Ability to secure peer reviewed funding
  • Evidence of distinction in research through high quality publications
  • Ability to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
