$16-$20/hour depending on experience

About City Barrel:

City Barrel Brewing Company is an open concept brewery and kitchen located in the surprisingly stunning town of Kansas City, MO. We are a 15BBL brewery specializing in making hoppy, wild and sour beers. We also offer farm-to-table cuisine with a world-class chef at the helm. City Barrel was founded by three partners, two of whom have nearly 20 years of experience in the brewing industry and the other is a CPA. We’re here to run a strong business while creating amazing experiences for our customers through unique events and amazing cutting-edge beers.

About the job:

The LEVEL 2 BREWER is responsible for carrying out production, cellaring, packaging, quality control, safety and maintenance operations related to the brewery. This position will oversee the highest levels of sanitation and cleanliness in all areas of the brewery. As a member of the brewing team, the LEVEL 2 BREWER operates by example and leadership, motivating all City Barrel employees and customers. In addition, the brewer is in contact with the customer and a cordial ambassador of the company.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Brewery operations – all wort production responsibilities (including grinding, mashing, boiling, graining, cleaning in place of the mash vat (CIP) and keeping detailed records in the software of Ekos brewery management.

  • Winery Operations – all responsibilities for fermentation and conditioning management including CIP and sanitation of the brite beer (BBT) fermenter/tank, fermentation monitoring, dry hopping, fruit and adjuvant additions, keg management, yeast management, transfer of beers between tanks, packaging monitoring and detailed record keeping.

  • Packaging operations: cask filling, cask washing, canning and bottling if necessary.

  • Strict adherence to brewing equipment sanitation protocol, including cleaning and sanitizing, maintenance and troubleshooting, including pumps, heat exchangers, gas regulators, keg couplers, etc. .

  • Follow the Ekos brewing schedule and recipes. Keep it up to date and accurate, and work in conjunction with the Brewery Operations Manager and Brewer 1 to ensure continuous beer availability and timely release of specialty beers.

  • Execute proper product sampling and analysis according to recipe schedule, monitoring vital fermentation control points including but not limited to gravity, pH, target temperatures and pressures.

  • Further develop quality control programs throughout the company with the goal of continuously improving products and processes.

  • Act as a leader, policy keeper and implementer, and as a professional.

  • Communicate with all employees, guests, supervisors and vendors in a respectful, timely and professional manner.

  • Management and execution of disinfection, cleaning and maintenance of the brewery.

  • Represent the company at local events and festivals, attend events, set up, serve and clean as needed.

  • Perform proper cell management and yeast handling and pitching procedures.

  • Act as safety representative for production and establish safe working conditions, attend regular safety meetings and maintain safety records.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Industry background preferred (not required)

  • Proven brewing knowledge including chemistry and biology

  • Strong problem solving skills and mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills

  • Personal motivation and ability to work effectively in a team

  • Adherence to workplace safety procedures and ability to work in confined spaces and solid knowledge of brewery hazards

  • Ability to execute and manage the details of multiple projects while maintaining alignment and focus on corporate level strategy and goals

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Basic computer skills, particularly with Google Suite – Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar and ability to use planning and budgeting systems effectively

  • Ability to learn and use Ekos brewing software through video training and hands-on practice.

  • Demonstrate attention to detail, with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and apply appropriate judgment in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to motivate people around to work as a team to ensure production goals are met.

  • Ability to perform shuffling and inventory operations on Ekos

Working environment

  • Tasks are performed indoors and outdoors, with events often taking place in the elements across all four seasons

  • Occasionally exposed to wet, cold and/or wet conditions; external weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat and risk of electric shock.

  • The noise level in the working environment is generally moderate to loud

Physical requirements

  • Must be able to lift 65 pounds unassisted and maneuver 170 pounds safely with proper body mechanics

  • Ability to stand for long periods and reach with hands and arms, stoop, squat, bend, twist.

  • Ability to work near moving mechanical parts safely

  • Ability to work in wet, humid, hot, cold, noisy conditions and with risk of electric shock

  • Safely handle caustic and acidic chemicals and disinfectants and know the proper time, temperature and application.

  • Move large quantities of food products with carts, trolleys, hand trucks and other mobile equipment

  • Climbing a ladder, bending, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling and performing repetitive motions

  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include near vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus in varying levels of lighting.

  • Ability to wear and provide personal protective equipment for personal use, including goggles, non-slip footwear, hearing protection and others as required.

Additional REQUIREMENTS to Consider

  • Full-time flexible hours are required (able to work days, nights, weekends, holidays)

  • Occasional car travel within 100 miles required (beer festivals)

  • Selected candidate must pass job offer, pre-employment background check
