Associate Professor: 37,573–40,526 RMB/month (with the possibility to go up to 44,413 RMB/month depending on future annual performance and evaluations after serving)

Senior Associate Professor: 45,087 – 47,778 RMB/month (with the possibility to go up to 51,292 RMB/month depending on future annual performance and evaluations after serving);

Located in Suzhou, China, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a young, dynamic and EMI university founded in 2006, and is a unique collaborative institution and the first joint venture university in China to offer both in the UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese accredited undergraduate degrees (Department of Education) for over 100 programmes. Several professorships are open in the Department of Biological Sciences. The department focuses on molecular biosciences and has recruited professors from world-renowned institutions working in this discipline. Although relatively young, the Department has already established a solid reputation, as evidenced by the growing number of grant awards to its staff (e.g. from the National Natural Science Foundation of China) and national and international (for example with Novartis and Unilever plc) . It has state-of-the-art instruments housed in bespoke labs and excellent technical support.

Staff also benefit from the fact that Suzhou is a “hot spot” for biotechnology and biomedical science – Cold Spring Harbor Asia (http://www.csh-asia.org/index.html) is located within walking distance and there are more than 1000 biotechnology companies in BioBay (http://en.biobay.com.cn/main/index.asp).

Current research areas include: cancer biology, structural biology, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, bioinformatics, cell signaling, genomics, molecular microbiology, neuroscience, proteomics and virology. The Department currently offers undergraduate and doctoral programs in biological sciences and bioinformatics, as well as a master’s program in biomolecular sciences.

Several professorships are open, at the rank of Lecturer / Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Associate Professor / Part-time Lecturer.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in the biological sciences or related discipline and should demonstrate appropriate teaching experience/potentials and evidence of ability to produce high-quality research publications.

Applicants should work at the cutting edge of biology and medicine, covering basic molecular biology, structural biology, cell biology, epigenetics, cancer biology, chemical biology, pharmacology, genomics, evolutionary biology, pathology, microbiology, virology, cancer, immunology, neuroscience, bioinformatics, biotechnology, bioengineering, neuroscience, biochemistry, structural biology, omics technology, proteomics, genetics, proteins, enzyme, metagenomics, RNA and transcriptomics.

Candidates for the post of Associate Professor or above should also have a strong background in teaching and academic supervision, as well as an international research profile in their fields and a successful record of research funding.

Teaching fellows typically focus on academic teaching only, and there are no (or few) expectations on their research performance.



In addition to the basic salary, academic staff members are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, child education, medical insurance and a one-time relocation allowance. Staff abroad may benefit from a “tax holiday” depending on their nationality and personal situation.


Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese labor laws and must comply with provincial government regulations.
